Roughly marble sized, Ioun Stones are named after Ioun, a god of knowledge and prophecy revered on some worlds. Many types of Ioun Stones exist, each type a distinct combination of shape and color.

When you take a Magic action to toss an Ioun Stone into the air, the stone orbits your head at a distance of 1d3 feet, conferring its benefit to you while doing so. You can have up to three Ioun Stones orbiting your head at the same time.

Each Ioun Stone orbiting your head is considered to be an object you are wearing. The orbiting stone avoids contact with other creatures and objects, adjusting its orbit to avoid collisions and thwarting all attempts by other creatures to attack or snatch it.

As a Utilize action, you can seize and stow any number of Ioun Stones orbiting your head. If your Attunement to an Ioun Stone ends while it’s orbiting your head, the stone falls as though you had dropped it.

The type of stone determines its rarity and effects.

Protection. You gain a +1 bonus to Armor Class while this dusty-rose prism orbits your head.
This small shard of everlasting crystal ice appears to be a chipped off fragment from the control crystal of Ermyar’s Tower.

A spell scroll bears the words of a single spell, written in a mystical cipher. If the spell is on your class’s spell list, you can read the scroll and cast its spell without providing any material components. Otherwise, the scroll is unintelligible. Casting the spell by reading the scroll requires the spell’s normal casting time. Once the spell is cast, the words on the scroll fade, and it crumbles to dust. If the casting is interrupted, the scroll is not lost.
If the spell is on your class’s spell list but of a higher level than you can normally cast, you must make an ability check using your spellcasting ability to determine whether you cast it successfully. The DC equals 17. On a failed check, the spell disappears from the scroll with no other effect.
This scroll contains a 7th level spell. The spell's saving throw DC is 18 and attack bonus is +10.
A wizard spell on a spell scroll can be copied just as spells in spellbooks can be copied. When a spell is copied from a spell scroll, the copier must succeed on an Intelligence (Arcana) check with a DC equal to 17. If the check succeeds, the spell is successfully copied. Whether the check succeeds or fails, the spell scroll is destroyed.

Sentience. Nettle is a sentient chaotic neutral weapon with an Intelligence of 15, a Wisdom of 10, and a Charisma of 14. It has hearing and darkvision out to a range of 120 feet. Nettle speaks Common and Halfling.

Personality. Nettle is greedy and impetuous, and prefers that its wielder share these ideals. It demands to be better taken care of than its previous owners did. If its bearer is lawfully‐aligned, or if its bearer does not spend at least an hour each day tending to it (polishing, applying resin to the string, etc.), Nettle denies its bonuses to attack and damage rolls and initiative checks. It also shouts out insults to those nearby, imposing disadvantage on any Charisma (Deception or Persuasion) checks or Dexterity (Stealth) check that its wielder makes to move silently.

This staff can be wielded as a magic quarterstaff that grants a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with it. While holding it, you gain a +2 bonus to Armor Class, saving throws, and spell attack rolls.

The staff has 20 charges for the following properties. The staff regains 2d8 + 4 expended charges daily at dawn. If you expend the last charge, roll a d20. On a 1, the staff retains its +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls but loses all other properties. On a 20, the staff regains 1d8 + 2 charges.

Power Strike. When you hit with a melee attack using the staff, you can expend 1 charge to deal an extra 1d6 force damage to the target.

Spells. The spell's customary knocking sound is replaced by the clear, ringing tone of the chime, which is audible out to 300 feet. The chime can be used 10 times. After the tenth time, it cracks and becomes useless.

Key. When struck before the crypt gate, the chime’s tone harmonizes with the door’s iron like two tuning forks. Dust motes spiral into neat lines as the bar unlatches itself, as if “correcting” an indexing error.

Appearance. A foot-long, hollow rod of dark electrum etched with ledger lines and a tiny slashed eye near one end. Inside rattles a thin bone sliver that never quite touches the metal—until struck.

When undead draw near, faint brushstrokes of silver light ripple along the katana’s black edge like moonlight through ink. The air cools; the weapon hums once, low and mournful, like a prayer remembered from another life.
Those who fought beside Kaori and Chanelle swore the blade could “hear the footfalls of the dead.”

Appearance. A long, gently curved katana with a mirrorless black blade—as if steel quenched in ink. The hamon line ripples like script. The oval tsuba is matte iron etched with nine tiny squares around a single open gauntlet of Helm, a nod to her oath-sister. Black ray-skin and cord wrap the grip; when you breathe out, the silk whisper sounds like pages turning.

Whose blade. The sword belonged to Kaori of Kozakura, a wandering sword-priest who fought beside Chanelle Hallwinter at Blacklake. Witnesses say the two held the breach until dawn; when Kaori fell, Chanelle raised the katana once more and swore never to let it rust. It was interred with Kaori’s effects under Helm’s Hold—and kept keen by quiet vigil.

Name & tale. Called Night of the Last Watch because Kaori’s final cuts were too fast to see—only the after-fall of the dead remained. The katana remembers that motion and teaches it to any worthy hand.

Attunement Rite (flavor only)
Kneel with the scabbarded blade across your palms. Speak the name of one person you will guard through the night. Draw the blade an inch; cold breath spills from the saya, and ink-black ripples chase the hamon. When you resheath, you feel the memory of five steps taken in a single heartbeat.

How Steel Wind Strike manifests (cosmetic)
When you loose the spell, kanji-like cut marks flicker in the air. Your form blurs into five ghost-images, each leaving a dark brushstroke across an enemy as you appear and vanish—like notes written and crossed out. A final quiet click sounds as the blade seats in the scabbard, even if you never moved it.

Roughly marble sized, Ioun Stones are named after Ioun, a god of knowledge and prophecy revered on some worlds. Many types of Ioun Stones exist, each type a distinct combination of shape and color.

When you take a Magic action to toss an Ioun Stone into the air, the stone orbits your head at a distance of 1d3 feet, conferring its benefit to you while doing so. You can have up to three Ioun Stones orbiting your head at the same time.

Each Ioun Stone orbiting your head is considered to be an object you are wearing. The orbiting stone avoids contact with other creatures and objects, adjusting its orbit to avoid collisions and thwarting all attempts by other creatures to attack or snatch it.

As a Utilize action, you can seize and stow any number of Ioun Stones orbiting your head. If your Attunement to an Ioun Stone ends while it’s orbiting your head, the stone falls as though you had dropped it.

The type of stone determines its rarity and effects.

A spell scroll bears the words of a single spell, written in a mystical cipher. If the spell is on your class’s spell list, you can read the scroll and cast its spell without providing any material components. Otherwise, the scroll is unintelligible. Casting the spell by reading the scroll requires the spell’s normal casting time. Once the spell is cast, the words on the scroll fade, and it crumbles to dust. If the casting is interrupted, the scroll is not lost.
If the spell is on your class’s spell list but of a higher level than you can normally cast, you must make an ability check using your spellcasting ability to determine whether you cast it successfully. The DC equals 17. On a failed check, the spell disappears from the scroll with no other effect.
This scroll contains a 7th level spell. The spell's saving throw DC is 18 and attack bonus is +10.
A wizard spell on a spell scroll can be copied just as spells in spellbooks can be copied. This staff can be wielded as a magic quarterstaff that grants a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with it. While holding it, you gain a +2 bonus to Armor Class, saving throws, and spell attack rolls.

The staff has 20 charges for the following properties. The staff regains 2d8 + 4 expended charges daily at dawn. If you expend the last charge, roll a d20. On a 1, the staff retains its +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls but loses all other properties. On a 20, the staff regains 1d8 + 2 charges.

Power Strike. When you hit with a melee attack using the staff, you can expend 1 charge to deal an extra 1d6 force damage to the target.

Spells. This hollow metal tube measures about 1 foot long and weighs 1 pound. As a Magic action, you can strike the chime to cast Knock. The spell's customary knocking sound is replaced by the clear, ringing tone of the chime, which is audible out to 300 feet. The chime can be used 10 times. After the tenth time, it cracks and becomes useless.

Key. When struck before the crypt gate, the chime’s tone harmonizes with the door’s iron like two tuning forks. Dust motes spiral into neat lines as the bar unlatches itself, as if “correcting” an indexing error.

Appearance. A foot-long, hollow rod of dark electrum etched with ledger lines and a tiny slashed eye near one end. Inside rattles a thin bone sliver that never quite touches the metal—until struck.

How it works (flavor). The tone “re-indexes” the mechanism you target—locks forget they were shut, seals misfile their own bindings, and wards briefly accept you as the proper entry in their ledger.

Quirks (cosmetic only).

While the tone rings, nearby writing straightens as if proofread.

Keys on your belt vibrate faintly in harmony.

If used on a container holding a written secret, the tone briefly harmonizes into a whispered note only the user hears (no information given—just a chill).

When undead draw near, faint brushstrokes of silver light ripple along the katana’s black edge like moonlight through ink. The air cools; the weapon hums once, low and mournful, like a prayer remembered from another life.
Those who fought beside Kaori and Chanelle swore the blade could “hear the footfalls of the dead.”

Appearance. A long, gently curved katana with a mirrorless black blade—as if steel quenched in ink. The hamon line ripples like script. The oval tsuba is matte iron etched with nine tiny squares around a single open gauntlet of Helm, a nod to her oath-sister. Black ray-skin and cord wrap the grip; when you breathe out, the silk whisper sounds like pages turning.

Whose blade. The sword belonged to Kaori of Kozakura, a wandering sword-priest who fought beside Chanelle Hallwinter at Blacklake. Witnesses say the two held the breach until dawn; when Kaori fell, Chanelle raised the katana once more and swore never to let it rust. It was interred with Kaori’s effects under Helm’s Hold—and kept keen by quiet vigil.

Name & tale. Called Night of the Last Watch because Kaori’s final cuts were too fast to see—only the after-fall of the dead remained. The katana remembers that motion and teaches it to any worthy hand.

Attunement Rite (flavor only)
Kneel with the scabbarded blade across your palms. Speak the name of one person you will guard through the night. Draw the blade an inch; cold breath spills from the saya, and ink-black ripples chase the hamon. When you resheath, you feel the memory of five steps taken in a single heartbeat.

How Steel Wind Strike manifests (cosmetic)
When you loose the spell, kanji-like cut marks flicker in the air. Your form blurs into five ghost-images, each leaving a dark brushstroke across an enemy as you appear and vanish—like notes written and crossed out. A final quiet click sounds as the blade seats in the scabbard, even if you never moved it.

Roughly marble sized, Ioun Stones are named after Ioun, a god of knowledge and prophecy revered on some worlds. Many types of Ioun Stones exist, each type a distinct combination of shape and color.

When you take a Magic action to toss an Ioun Stone into the air, the stone orbits your head at a distance of 1d3 feet, conferring its benefit to you while doing so. You can have up to three Ioun Stones orbiting your head at the same time.

Each Ioun Stone orbiting your head is considered to be an object you are wearing. The orbiting stone avoids contact with other creatures and objects, adjusting its orbit to avoid collisions and thwarting all attempts by other creatures to attack or snatch it.

As a Utilize action, you can seize and stow any number of Ioun Stones orbiting your head. If your Attunement to an Ioun Stone ends while it’s orbiting your head, the stone falls as though you had dropped it.

The type of stone determines its rarity and effects.

Protection. You gain a +1 bonus to Armor Class while this dusty-rose prism orbits your head.

A spell scroll bears the words of a single spell, written in a mystical cipher. If the spell is on your class’s spell list, you can read the scroll and cast its spell without providing any material components. Otherwise, the scroll is unintelligible. Casting the spell by reading the scroll requires the spell’s normal casting time. Once the spell is cast, the words on the scroll fade, and it crumbles to dust. If the casting is interrupted, the scroll is not lost.
If the spell is on your class’s spell list but of a higher level than you can normally cast, you must make an ability check using your spellcasting ability to determine whether you cast it successfully. The DC equals 17. On a failed check, the spell disappears from the scroll with no other effect.
This scroll contains a 7th level spell. The spell's saving throw DC is 18 and attack bonus is +10.
A wizard spell on a spell scroll can be copied just as spells in spellbooks can be copied. Staff, very rare (requires attunement by a sorcerer, warlock, or wizard)

This staff can be wielded as a magic quarterstaff that grants a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with it. While holding it, you gain a +2 bonus to Armor Class, saving throws, and spell attack rolls.

The staff has 20 charges for the following properties. The staff regains 2d8 + 4 expended charges daily at dawn. If you expend the last charge, roll a d20. On a 1, the staff retains its +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls but loses all other properties. On a 20, the staff regains 1d8 + 2 charges.

Power Strike. When you hit with a melee attack using the staff, you can expend 1 charge to deal an extra 1d6 force damage to the target.

Spells. While holding this staff, you can use an action to expend 1 or more of its charges to cast one of the following spells from it, using your spell save DC and spell attack bonus: cone of cold (5 charges), fireball (5th-level version, 5 charges), globe of invulnerability (6 charges), hold monster (5 charges), levitate (2 charges), lightning bolt (5th-level version, 5 charges), magic missile (1 charge), ray of enfeeblement (1 charge), or wall of force (5 charges).

Retributive Strike. You can use an action to break the staff over your knee or against a solid surface, performing a retributive strike. The staff is destroyed and releases its remaining magic in an explosion that expands to fill a 30-foot-radius sphere centered on it.

You have a 50 percent chance to instantly travel to a random plane of existence, avoiding the explosion. If you fail to avoid the effect, you take force damage equal to 16 × the number of charges in the staff. Every other creature in the area must make a DC 17 Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes an amount of damage based on how far away it is from the point of origin, as shown in the following table. On a successful save, a creature takes half as much damage.

The Pupil of the Forgotten (Ersatz Eye)

This magical eye replaces a real one that was lost or removed. While the Ersatz Eye is embedded in your eye socket, you can see through the tiny orb as though it were your natural eye. You can insert or remove the Ersatz Eye as a Magic action, and it can't be removed against your will while you are alive.

Guardian.
A heartbeat before danger, the smoky iris tightens and a cold page-turn whispers in your ear. Your hand moves before your mind does (+2 initiative while you’re not incapacitated).

Appearance. A tiny, polished orb of smoked glass with a hair-thin slashed-eye sigil drifting inside like an inclusion. Held to the light, faint letters ripple across its surface and vanish.

Story. Forged by scribes of the Eldritch Eye to “complete the face of a witness,” these replacements are traded as alms to the maimed—and as favors to those who prefer to see without being seen.

When you focus, a faint ink ring halos the iris for a heartbeat.

In deep darkness, the eye catches the softest glint like wet ink, though it sheds no light.

Scribe’s Chime of Unsealing (Chime of Opening)

This hollow metal tube measures about 1 foot long and weighs 1 pound. As a Magic action, you can strike the chime to cast Knock. The spell's customary knocking sound is replaced by the clear, ringing tone of the chime, which is audible out to 300 feet. The chime can be used 10 times. After the tenth time, it cracks and becomes useless.

Key. When struck before the crypt gate, the chime’s tone harmonizes with the door’s iron like two tuning forks. Dust motes spiral into neat lines as the bar unlatches itself, as if “correcting” an indexing error.

Appearance. A foot-long, hollow rod of dark electrum etched with ledger lines and a tiny slashed eye near one end. Inside rattles a thin bone sliver that never quite touches the metal—until struck.

How it works (flavor). The tone “re-indexes” the mechanism you target—locks forget they were shut, seals misfile their own bindings, and wards briefly accept you as the proper entry in their ledger.

Quirks (cosmetic only).

While the tone rings, nearby writing straightens as if proofread.

Keys on your belt vibrate faintly in harmony.

If used on a container holding a written secret, the tone briefly harmonizes into a whispered note only the user hears (no information given—just a chill).

Lore. Cult scribes of the Eldritch Eye carried these to “correct” doors that refused to open. Helm’s faithful claim they’re dishonest keys; Vecna’s call them proper citations.

Bound into this weapon is a level 5 spell. The spell is determined when the weapon is created and must belong to the Conjuration, Divination, Evocation, Necromancy, or Transmutation school of magic. The weapon has 6 charges and regains 1d6 expended charges daily at dawn. While holding the weapon, you can expend 1 charge to cast its spell.

The spell's saving throw DC is 17, and its attack bonus is +9.

Versatile. A Versatile weapon can be used with one or two hands. A damage value in parentheses appears with the property. The weapon deals that damage when used with two hands to make a melee attack.

Mastery: Sap. If you hit a creature with this weapon, that creature has Disadvantage on its next attack roll before the start of your next turn.

Sentinel (Undead)

When undead draw near, faint brushstrokes of silver light ripple along the katana’s black edge like moonlight through ink. The air cools; the weapon hums once, low and mournful, like a prayer remembered from another life.
Those who fought beside Kaori and Chanelle swore the blade could “hear the footfalls of the dead.”

Appearance. A long, gently curved katana with a mirrorless black blade—as if steel quenched in ink. The hamon line ripples like script. The oval tsuba is matte iron etched with nine tiny squares around a single open gauntlet of Helm, a nod to her oath-sister. Black ray-skin and cord wrap the grip; when you breathe out, the silk whisper sounds like pages turning.

Whose blade. The sword belonged to Kaori of Kozakura, a wandering sword-priest who fought beside Chanelle Hallwinter at Blacklake. Witnesses say the two held the breach until dawn; when Kaori fell, Chanelle raised the katana once more and swore never to let it rust. It was interred with Kaori’s effects under Helm’s Hold—and kept keen by quiet vigil.

Name & tale. Called Night of the Last Watch because Kaori’s final cuts were too fast to see—only the after-fall of the dead remained. The katana remembers that motion and teaches it to any worthy hand.

Attunement Rite (flavor only)
Kneel with the scabbarded blade across your palms. Speak the name of one person you will guard through the night. Draw the blade an inch; cold breath spills from the saya, and ink-black ripples chase the hamon. When you resheath, you feel the memory of five steps taken in a single heartbeat.

How Steel Wind Strike manifests (cosmetic)
When you loose the spell, kanji-like cut marks flicker in the air. Your form blurs into five ghost-images, each leaving a dark brushstroke across an enemy as you appear and vanish—like notes written and crossed out. A final quiet click sounds as the blade seats in the scabbard, even if you never moved it.

Fighting Cues (use at the table)
On a hit, a faint ledger line connects you and the target, snapping as the blow lands (Sap).

When you draw, the black steel drinks nearby light, leaving a pale rim-light along the edge.

If you ready a strike, thin shreds of paper-white petals drift—Kaori’s last stand remembered.

Source/Aspect. Vecna edits your fate line so hostile magic “can’t find the entry.”

Look/Mark. A faint, ruler-straight scar appears across one eyelid (or over the heart), ending in a tiny knot shaped like a slashed eye. When magic targets you, the mark darkens like wet ink, then fades.

Omen. In moments of danger you hear a page turn and feel the world hesitate, as if someone just crossed out a sentence about you.

Manifestations (cosmetic, choose 1–2):

Enemy sigils aimed at you smear into blotted text before striking.

Your pupils momentarily become ink-black when you resist magic.

Roleplay Prompts.

You instinctively look for footnotes or loopholes in speeches, laws, and spells.

You dislike speaking your true name aloud; it feels like handing over a page number.

You feel compelled to keep a small index of every spell you’ve endured.
