Shadows of Baator: Avernus Rising (Session 45)

As you leave Tiamat's lair, you were contacted by Dara to return to the Wandering Emporium for a short meeting. Upon your return, she introduces to you another adventurer who helped her before and can aid you in your quest to find the Sword of Zariel, as well as telling you that she will have more tasks that she wants you to do for her holy mission once you've acquired the sword. Soon afterwards, you begin your journey to the location of the Bleeding Citadel, only to discover that the place is slowly being consumed by a huge infernal scab. Worried that there may have been others that are making their way inside and that the scab will eventually absorb the citadel, Lulu implores you to make haste in finding an entrance into the citadel and acquire the sword before it's too late.

You venture into the infernal scab that slowly covers the Bleeding Citadel in search of its entrance, only to discover that numerous demons are digging their way through the scab in search of the Sword of Zariel. When you eventually reached the bottom of the scab and located the citadel entrance, you are greeted by a group of demons who are desperate to enter the citadel and offers an agreement to not kill you in exchange for helping them open the entrance and letting them take half of the treasures that can be found inside the citadel. After tricking them into stalling long enough to cast forbiddance near the citadel entrance, the demons realize your intentions and attempt to fight back.

As you stand your ground in the town of Idyllglen, you clashed with various bands of gnolls and demons who are led by the demon lord Yeenoghu. Eventually, the angel Zariel arrives at the scene along with Lulu to banish the demon lord back to the Abyss, ending to the demonic incursion. Before the memory ends and you are returned to the Bleeding Citadel, the angel leaves you with a question on whether or not you would sacrifice everything you stand for if it means saving everyone's lives.

Story Award: Champion of the Dragon Queen
You gain the ability to cast the spell dragon’s breath at 5th level with a range of Self. Once you casts this spell, you can’t cast it again until the next dawn.

Additionally, as a champion of Tiamat, you can call upon her power to shatter the chains of Elturel or to perform a similar task by meditating in prayer for 10 minutes. You can only make a request upon Tiamat’s power in this way once, and only in Avernus.

With Zariel's forces closing in on the High Hall, you race your way across the city to confront the archdevil. Meanwhile, you entrusted the Solar Insidiator Locks to Arkhan and Torogar as they soar above the city to unlock the Companion and provide you cover through Tiamat's forces. After some fierce battles with demons, you finally come face to face with Zariel herself. With Lulu finally reuniting with her fallen friend and with her magic sword in hand, you persuaded Zariel to abandon her fruitless vendetta against demonkind by returning to her former angelic self and save Elturel. Finally seeing mercy and forgiveness in your words for the very first time, Zariel embraces her newfound sense of hope and relinquishes her devilish persona for good; a transformation that causes the chains binding Elturel to Avernus to break. Arkhan and Torogar were also successful in unlocking the companion, freeing the planetar imprisoned within. With the combined powers of the celestials present, Elturel finally returns to Toril along with its inhabitants. As the people begin to rebuild their city and Zariel and Lulu returning to Mt. Celestia, you get the feeling that your adventure is far from over, for there is still more to be done back in Avernus...

A single golden feather from the wings of the now-redeemed Zariel, as a token of gratitude for saving her from damnation. While holding this feather, you can cast planar ally as an action to call upon Zariel (solar) and Lulu (hollyphant), after which the feather dissolves into a ray of sunlight. If the two are called to aid you, they do so for up to 1 hour, with no payment asked for in return.
