Each character that loses to Halaster, must spend one year and a day serving the mad mage here in his nine-pin alley, at the conclusion of the adventure. This can be accounted for a couple different ways.
* The character spends 366 downtime days and may now be played again.
* The character is shelved for 366 real days, returning to play, once that time has passed.
* The player may write a 1500 word journal of their time in service to Halaster (make it entertaining and keep it family friendly) and email a PDF to community@dndadventurersleague.org to receive a full pardon and have the downtime day requirement waived.

Story Award: Vergadian's Firespirits
Vergadain, a dwarven deity of wealth and trickery, was known for his favored drink; as clear as water and smelled of honey and cane sugar, but was in truth an incredibly potent liquor that put standard dwarven spirits to shame. He would sometimes challenge unknowing humans and elves to drinking contents, where he would slyly swap in sweetened water while his opponent would down drink after drink of this highly-flammable liquid. It rarely ended well for them. And now you have the recipe!

Downtime Activity
You may spend 60 downtime days to craft one barrel of firespirits. Each batch requires special sweet herbs from Bitter-root’s copse near Durlag’s Tower and 100 gp worth of other materials, including aged dwarven spirits blessed by a dwarven priest. If you find yourself in possession of campaign documentation that bestows ownership of a distillery, this time and gold cost is reduced by half.

Each barrel contains approximately 30 gallons of firespirits, and can be sold for 1,000 gp.
Alternately, as this is a rare elixir; it may be worth a significant amount to Fai Chen, certain high-ranking lords, or other purveyors of such fineries. Additionally, if you give a nip of firespirits (just a wee one) to a dwarf, all Charisma (Persuasion) checks made with them are made with advantage for the next hour.

You are known to be an ally of the Thayan Plateau, whether you want to or not. You have advantage on Charisma-based checks with Red Wizards and other non-slaves from Thay, and at the DM’s discretion may have disadvantage when dealing with Harpers and other enemies of Thay.

You have wronged Zulkir Dar’lon Ma and he has made his displeasure known. Every time you complete an adventure and for each day of downtime you spend, roll a d20. On a roll of 20, you are accosted by agents of the Thay – typically three Red Wizards and two Assassins. Once you die to these agents you may cross this story award off; alternately, you can sacrifice one rare or better permanent magic item and 10,000 gp to pay off your debt of dishonor to the Zulkir. Your DM may choose to have you check for the Thayan attack whenever you begin to take a long rest, if they wish.

Story Award: Nature of the Weave You have uncovered a series of tomes written by the archmage, Manshoon. By spending 50 downtime days, you gain proficiency in the Arcana skill. If you are already proficient in Arcana, you double your proficiency when making checks with the skill.
