The family's Heirloom staff was once only well worn mahogany, but it's been upgraded while passing through 14 generations of Petersham hands. The head and end cap are adorned with a few tasteful bands of precious metals (mithril, adamantine, platinum, gold and silver), most taken from a dragon's hoard by Petersham's grandfather's great-grandfather. These bands grow slightly warm while within 120' of a dragon. The grandson of the original Petersham had this staff crafted to mark the 300th anniversary of the Petersham school and carved into the bands are the names of each wizard in the Petersham line. While there are many stories surrounding this object, perhaps the most peculiar is that the wife and family of Anton "Halfwit" Petersham had his soul grafted into the crystal atop the staff, which you'll learn as he begins to mutter about buttered toast at inopportune times, audibily faux-snore during boring lectures, or when he glows a crimson red if within 120 feet of Mind Flayers or Intellect Devourers, having learned the hard way that a mind is a terrible thing to waste.
