Notes
While visiting a village by the name of Arben, myself and three others had been informed of some magic lights that were frightening the livestock. Upon investigation, we had discovered the lights to be magical in nature, almost as if it was fey magic. We heard the movement of heavy metal against metal and stone and decided to investigate. We had discovered an encampment of Modrons in the cave. They had informed us that a device called the Chains of Mechanus was damaged and they were here to assess the damage done and if it could be repaird. We offered to scout ahead for the curious creatures to see what the damage consisted of. The Pentadrone approved and allowed us to delve into the cave, giving our Bugbear a potion of Acid resistance, just in case. We were first beset by a curious group of floating, squid-like creatures. These were non-hostile and appeared to be Flumphs. Admittedly cute things, one of them had taken a liking to me and gave me a gift, what I later learned to be a potent magical scroll to empower a weapon with elemental force. Our next hurdle was a series of Gas Vents that, while not harmful, proved to cause some duress for my companions, the gas made them sluggish in some ways, but they were still capable. Next we came upon a deep pit, our pixie friend, Brenn, flew down the shaft to get a look at how deep it ran. We were fortunate to have enough rope to traverse 120 feet straight down, but the climb was difficult. Our Bugbear, Bate, went first, being the strongest and capable of catching anyone who may fall. This was a wise decision. While I, myself, did not have any difficulty climbing down, our paladin companion, James, lost his grip in the last 20 feet. Fortunately, Bate caught him and prevented any injury. We next came across a lake of water, about fifty feet across to a passage on the other side. It was not very wide, but it was easily 20 feet deep or more. Failing any kind of boat, we sent Brenn with a length of rope to make a lifeline for those of us who were not confident in their swimming. Ashamedly, I was the only one who needed it, having nearly drowned trying to get across. Getting waterlogged and exhausted in the process. We pressed on into a large chamber, glowing with lichen, and a series of chains and gears, struggling to move against a strange ooze that was halting its movements. I tested to see if the ooze was acidic, using my natural resistance to acidic substances to test it. Not only was the substance acidic, it was alive! Four of these slimy creatures assailed us, screaming horrid sounds into our very minds, and striking them without magic damaged our equipment. I sacrificed my dagger to attack them at range, Catapul proving to be a handy spell in a tight spot. Sensing worse things, I restrained my magic and made use of my Crossbow while the other took to the front. My instincts were right, just as we defeat the last of the foul slimes, something larger came from the ceiling and nearly dropped on Bate. Slashing at it split it in twain, but it made it easier to tear it into shreds. My crossbow destroying the last one. Bate's axe is nearly destroyed and my dagger was trashed, but it can be repaired. The Modrons who had accompanied us assessed the damage to the machine and discussed our payment before we returned to the Modron Camp. We were rewarded for our work with a hundred gold each, and a magic lantern to aid us in seeing the unseen. I had also had the opportunity to learn of the Modron's physiology, a resource I intend to use to construct something I have had on my mind for some time now.
