Leider war Fafnar stärker, geschickter und zäher als sein Bruder und ihre Waffentrainer merkten schnell, dass Fafnar seinen Bruder um Weiten übertreffen würde, sollte er den Weg des Kriegers einschlagen. Sein Vater Thogrimm befahl ihm daher eine andere Profession zu wählen. Er erwartete wohl, dass sich sein zweitgeborener Sohn für die Priesterschaft entscheiden würde, die mit beinah ebenso hohem Ansehen und hoher Ehre kam, wie der Weg des Kriegers. Doch Fafnar überraschte alle, als er erklärte, er würde die Magie studieren und den Pfad des Gelehrten beschreiten. Er tat dies, da nur wenig Ehre mit Magie zu gewinnen war. Denn er fürchtete, dass er selbst als Kleriker von Moradin, seinen unbegabten aber herzensguten älteren Bruder in den Schatten stellen würde. Fafnar lernte fleißig und mit hohem Eifer und bemühte sich die komplizierten arkanen Texte und ihre Bedeutung zu verstehen. Doch seine Lehrer merkten schnell, dass er sich diesmal außerhalb seiner Begabung bewegte. Lediglich die Waffen- und die Schutzzauber gelangen ihm mit einigen Mühen. Thogrimm sah, wie sehr sich sein Sohn bemühte und erkannte, dass es die Liebe zu seinem älteren Bruder war, die ihn hatten diesen Weg einschlagen lassen. Daher überredete er den Hofzauberer des Königs einen fein gearbeiteten Mithral-Stirnreif für Fafnar zu verzaubern. Diesen schenkte er Fafnar zu seinem 50sten Namenstag. Als Fafnar den Stirnreif anlegte, bemerkte er, wie er plötzlich die Zusammenhänge verstand. Arkane Formeln und Zeichnungen waren plötzlich klar und offensichtlich. Seitdem hält er das Geschenk seines Vaters in höchsten Ehren und trägt den Stirnreif praktisch Tag und Nacht, selbst unter Rüstungen. Nur zwei Jahre nach diesem Tag übertraf er mit seinen Fähigkeiten die meisten seiner Lehrer. Und Fafnar erkannte, dass er in Citadel Adbar nicht mehr viel über Magie lernen würde. Schon lange hatte er mit den Wanderern sympathisiert, die offen für neue Dinge und fremde Völker waren. In den alten Gesetzen seines Volkes fand er eines, dass die Nachfolge innerhalb eines Haus regelte und Streit zwischen den Söhnen vermeiden sollte. Eine Auslegung dieses Gesetzes erlaubte es ihm Citadel Adbar zu verlassen ohne mit dem Clan oder seiner Familie zu brechen. So begannen seine Abenteuer...
